The 5 R's of Behavior

Redirect, Relate, Re-engage, Remove, Release

When behavior gets tricky, follow the path: Redirect → Relate → Re-engage, and only then Remove or Release. The goal is never punishment — it's connection.

    Redirect

    Warn + offer an alternative

    Give a warning, explaining why the behavior doesn't align with our values (Have Fun, Love God, Love People, Do Your Best). Then offer an alternative activity or behavior.

    Relate

    Get curious, get on their level

    Connect with the child on their level. Is something going on at home or school that could be driving the disruption? Ask: how can we best serve this child right now?

    Re-engage

    Welcome them back in

    When the child is ready, reintroduce them to the environment. If the behavior doesn't improve, engage the parent.

    Remove

    Last resort for older kids

    If a child doesn't respond to redirection or re-engaging, they may need to step out to calm down. The room leader contacts the Team Lead (walkie) to have the child's badge displayed for pickup. Only after other strategies have been tried.

    Release

    For infants & preschoolers

    If an infant or preschooler can't regulate after attempts to comfort, use the walkie to notify the point person to display the child's badge for pickup. Also inform your servant team leader.
